Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Why is there a need to outsource work?
Answer: Major portion of the work is being outsourced to third world countries because of the following reasons.

  • The boom in information technology, the advancement of internet, voice over IP and enterprise applications have made it easier for the companies to hire, manage and co-ordinate their work at very lower prices.
  • Availability of skilled and educated labor enhances the quality of output which global businesses are looking at.
  • The cut throat market competition has persuaded the organizations to follow the suit of the competitors i.e. lowering cost to expand profits.
  • Global economic downturn is another reason why companies are more focused on improving their return on IT investments and closely managing IT spending.

Question: Which country is leading BPO?

Answer: India is the leader in BPO services. It has a pool of talented and educated professionals suited for quality output.

Education system in India produces 200,000-250,000 engineering and computer science graduates and more than 2 million other graduates who have a good command on spoken English. According to a NASSCOM-McKinsey report, India's (BPO) industry is expected to grow to more than $21 billion by 2008. Revenues from the export of India's BPO services could increase from 19% in 2002 to 27% by 2008, as a proportion of the total revenues from export of IT services from India.

The Indian government has exempted IT service companies from tax for 10 years in 2000. Due to this, the effective tax rate for most of these companies was reduced from the normal 36%-plus to around 15% currently. For export-oriented firms this rate effectively is 0%. However, the net tax rate should rise through 2009 as these breaks expire. This rise should be steep since most of these breaks expire in 2008-09.
